Mary Henderson was born in London, spent 4-5 years in Canada, went to school in Suffolk then St Andrews University, ended up back in Dundee where her maternal grandparents came from. She married a Dundonian engineer/planner and they raised four children; she was lucky to be able to stay at home with the kids while working with the Scottish Pre-school Playgroups Association and Women’s Aid. Mary joined Engender, the women’s organisation in Scotland and became interested in “herstory”, given that in Dundee only men have statues.
This resulted in www.dundeewomenstrail.org.uk – a book and two dozen plaques around the city. One of the women featured is Ethel Moorhead; Mary became fascinated.
She is not a professional writer, but has contributed to the Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women and has written for various journals on subjects from children’s birthday cakes to the intricacies of the Department of Work & Pensions.
